Mission Statement

The Sarasota Chorus of the Keys and quartets seek to preserve and further develop the original American art form of four-part a cappella harmony - barbershop harmony - while striving for musical excellence and performing frequently for the broadest possible spectrum of Southwest Florida audiences.  The Chorus is committed to contributing to the cultural development of the community through responsible public service; while providing a charitable support to benefit school music educators and young men participating in their music programs.

 We do this through:

  • Promotion: We promote the rich and unique blend of the original American art form of four-part a cappella harmony to local, state and national vocal singing organizations and audiences.
  • Membership: We seek and offer men of all ages the opportunity to join our organization and enjoy good fellowship through interesting programs and activities.
  • Performances: We seek and offer performances in chorus or quartet form throughout the year.
  • Partnerships: We seek and encourage partnerships with other musical organizations in order to develop new and unusual musical programs and perform together.
  • Education: We present an active program of demonstrations and clinics to encourage scholastic choral students, their music educators and their schools to examine four-part a cappella harmony and adopt it as a teaching tool.
  • Rehearsals: We conduct rehearsals no less often than weekly throughout the year to insure that we are performance ready at all times.
  • Competition: We participate in statewide competition to determine our level of performance through formal judging and our standing among other similar choral organizations.
  • Charitable Activities: Through our Sheridan E. Brown Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund we provide tuition for students and music educators attending a cappella music work shops, scholarships to college bound needy male high school seniors with exceptional achievements in the field of music, and professional college level training for high school music educators and choral directors in the art of four-part a cappella harmony.
  • Community Involvement: We participate in a variety of public and community projects and serve on numerous governing councils.
  • Investment: We invest in equipment and services that will enable us to perform at the highest possible level of accuracy, presentation and quality of sound.
  • Legacy Fund: As a 501 [C] [3] organization, the Chorus of the Keys seeks foundation grants, personal donations, and corporate sponsorships from those who appreciate our role in the community and would like to help us towards the achievement of our mission. Unrestricted donations are invested in our Legacy Fund which resides as a donor-advised fund among the pooled endowment funds of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. Restricted funds are invested or expended as directed by the donor or the granting foundation or corporation. The Legacy Fund serves a companion fund to the Brown Scholarship fund for variety of charitable and public service activities of the chorus.
